I’m still using the original lens that came with the machine, but I’m wondering if switching to a different one could improve image quality. Has anyone noticed a big difference when upgrading lenses?
Hi Jack! The standard lens currently installed on the XRF is 2.5 inches.
While using a smaller lens can increase the laser’s energy density, replacing the lens changes the focal length, which requires a longer adjustment to the focal distance. Because the Z-axis travel (upward movement) is limited, the machine may not be able to reach the new lens’s optimal focal distance.
The lens itself won’t improve image quality unless your current one is damaged or affecting the beam. If you’re doing raster photo engraving, here are a couple of important tips:
The quality of your source photo makes a huge difference. Start with the best possible image.
Use photo processing software to prepare your image before engraving. It takes some testing, but it’s worth it. I personally use Image-R, and even managed to get great results from lower-quality photos with the right adjustments.
