Paint chipping when laser cutting pre painted MDF

Has anyone had small pieces of paint come off when laser cutting MDF that has already been painted? The paint is chipping along the cut edges, so I have to recut a lot of pieces. If you’ve had this happen before, how can you stop it from happening again? I’d like to hear any advice or changes to settings that have worked for you.

Could you try changing the order of your process: Cut → Sand → Paint. This prevents laser smoke and residue from damaging the final finish.
If you prefer to paint first, try applying masking tape to the surface of the MDF before processing. This will help protect the paint from scorching or charring; you can simply peel the tape off once the cut is complete.
