Engraving the Back of a Topo Map

Steve Moseley from MAKINGATHOME shares a meaningful project where he engraved the back of a carved topographic map of his parents’ farm. The engraving includes his parents’ names, their town, and the wood type used—spalted hackberry sourced directly from the farm, adding a personal and lasting touch to the piece.

For the engraving, Steve used 400 mm/sec, 60% power, and 500 lines per inch, achieving clean, crisp lettering. This video is a great example of how thoughtful engraving settings and material choice can elevate a project from decorative to deeply personal.
